Even after the Supreme Court ended affirmative action, a lot of students are still writing about their racial and cultural identities in their college essays because it’s a real part of who they are, and it shapes how they’ve moved through the world. What’s changed is the pressure: now those stories can feel like both a personal truth and a strategic way to communicate background without explicitly “checking a box.” It’s a reminder that students will always find ways to be seen, especially when the rules around how they’re allowed to be seen keep shifting.
