Why is the Common Application asking about family responsibilities in the activities section?

New this year in the Common Application is a question of whether or not you spend more than 4 hours a week helping do chores around the house. Why is this being asked? Because having many household responsibilities could reduce the amount of time you have available for your own academic chores. Studies show that the more hours you spend helping around the house translates to lower academic involvement.  Schools are now asking this question to get a sense of who you are and how you spend your time outside of class. It is important to answer this question truthfully and in no way will it adversely affect you if you do not spend more than 4 hours doing household chores.
